FOX Sports VR

To learn which VR and 360 video content and experiences resonate with users and why, FOX Sports created an easy-to-use application that incorporates a range of media experiences—live events produced in VR, real-time VR highlights, 360 content, conventional streaming in VR environment with real-time stats, multi-user avatar-based social functionality. To reach the widest possible audience, the app spanned the spectrum of immersion, from mobile-only viewing (Magic Window) to Cardboard to Head-Mounted Displays (Samsung Gear, Google Daydream).

Event Production

CHALLENGE: In partnership with production teams, identify events, develop VR production techniques and experiment with varying user experiences to learn what works while on a limited budget.

SOLUTION: Deliver live-action productions across soccer, college football, basketball and hockey. Test 180- and 360-degree camera views, with three to seven positions per venue. Offer a live “director’s-cut” from the best available camera position. Secure multiple sponsors to defray production costs.

Super Bowl Highlights

CHALLENGE: Create a Super Bowl-centered experience that allows users to “snack” on exclusive VR content during the game.

SOLUTION: Publish real-time highlights of key plays, notifying users as each one is available. Send notifications across the larger suite of FOX Sports products to drive audience to VR application.

Co-viewing Features

CHALLENGE: VR’s immersiveness is a selling point, but typically comes at the cost of isolation for the viewer. Is there a way users can share the experience via communal viewing?

SOLUTION: Design and deploy social functionality, encouraging users to invite their Facebook friends to join them in a room—allowing friends to watch together, talking via avatars and directional audio.

NBA Experience

CHALLENGE: Create a VR experience that adds value to conventional regional broadcasts without requiring additional production resources.

SOLUTION: In partnership with teams and regional sports networks, create a 3D viewing suite for existing game programming. Customize each suite with team posters and color schemes. Incorporate real-time data right next to the screen. Provide custom prompts to co-view the game with other fans using the app’s social features. Drive the audience to the experience with in-program and in-app marketing.
